Operators protect their financial systems carefully. The subsurface archive, often the single most valuable asset the company holds, is frequently wide open.
Ask an upstream operator where its most commercially sensitive data sits and the honest answer is usually the technical archive: seismic volumes, interpretation projects, well logs, reserves workings. Ask where the strongest access controls sit and the answer is usually the finance system.
Why the gap exists
Technical data environments grow organically around the needs of interpretation teams. Shared drives, project directories and workstation-local copies proliferate because they make the technical work faster. Access is granted broadly because restricting it slows people down. The result is an archive with real acquisition cost and real strategic value, governed less carefully than the payroll.
Practical controls that do not obstruct the work
- Classify the archive: not everything needs the same protection
- Apply role-based access at project level rather than blanket share permissions
- Log and monitor bulk copy and export activity
- Control removable media and personal cloud sync on technical workstations
- Include the technical archive in the backup and recovery test cycle
- Address departure procedure specifically for technical staff
The objective is not to make interpretation harder. It is to ensure that data representing years of acquisition and evaluation spend cannot leave the organisation unnoticed.
