Most Nigerian operators hold more subsurface data than they have interpreted. Before committing to a new acquisition programme, there is usually a cheaper question worth asking first.
New seismic acquisition is one of the largest discretionary line items an operator will approve. It is also, frequently, the first option considered when a block underperforms expectations. That instinct is understandable, and sometimes correct. But it skips a question that costs a fraction as much to answer: has the data already on the shelf been properly worked?
What legacy data still holds
Seismic volumes acquired a decade or more ago were processed with the tools and velocity models available at the time. Reprocessing that same field data with modern conditioning, noise attenuation and migration routinely recovers structural detail that simply was not visible in the original product. The reflectors were always in the field record. They were not resolvable in the delivered volume.
The same is true of interpretation. A structural framework built under a particular geological model tends to be defended rather than revisited. When a new team rebuilds the interpretation from raw data instead of inheriting the existing horizon set, the resulting map is frequently different in ways that matter to well placement.
A practical sequence
- Audit what exists: field records, processed volumes, well logs, reports and their provenance
- Condition and phase-match mixed vintages before any interpretation begins
- Rebuild well ties and synthetics independently of the legacy framework
- Interpret from first principles, then compare against the legacy maps as a check
- Quantify uncertainty explicitly rather than presenting a single deterministic surface
Where new acquisition genuinely is the answer
Reinterpretation is not a universal substitute. Where the existing fold, offset range or azimuthal coverage is fundamentally inadequate for the imaging problem, no amount of reprocessing will resolve it. The point is not to avoid acquisition. It is to enter that decision knowing precisely what the existing data can and cannot support, and to be able to defend that position to partners and the regulator.
In our experience, the reinterpretation study pays for itself either way: it either identifies drillable targets, or it produces the documented technical justification for the acquisition spend.
